Edbwoy! Interview

Interview & Photography by Sterling Terriault

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Wilmington. Left for a little while to new castle and came right back three years later. I’m glad to be back in the city.

What got you into making/producing music?

I started getting into music when I was 14. At the time, I was just getting into the idea recording music and shit. I joined this group called Black Imagery with my friends and they were all talented as hell. When i saw the shit they were putting out, it blew my mind. They were so much better than me, but encouraged the hell out of me to get better at rapping and that was all the boost that I needed. Started making raps and recording them on a Rock Band (the video game) mic.

Were you an inside or outside kid and how did that affect your music?

I was definitely an outside kid when I was younger. Skateboarding with friends, going on long walks to their cribs and shit like that. But around high school, I was inside a majority of the time. I just became a bigger rap nerd than I already was. I just got into flying lotus, mndsgn, knxwledge,j dilla, madlib & MF DOOM. it definitely reflected in the music.

When did you move from just rapping to producing?

I needed beats to rap on. Back in 2014, I had a brief conversation with my boy Charley about rapping and how i’ve been struggling trying to find the right beats or the right sounds for me to work with. Bro was just like, “ok, so make the beats you wanna rap over”. And the rest is history.

What’s your go-to DAW and what made you stick with it?

FL Studio. That’s my baby fr. it just flows the best honestly. Easy to navigate, doesn’t feel like rocket science. It’s been my favorite jawn since day one… but ableton has been looking kinda good recently.

Who are your most influential artists that you’re listening to?

earl sweatshirt, isaiah rashad, q-tip, j diilla, madlib, & my friends.

How does (do you think) anime influence(s) your overall aesthetic?

I think anime influences the way my production sounds. I usually put it on when i’m making music and most of the time i’m either trying to match the visuals, taking topics from certain plot points and trying to put them into my perspective. I try to make everything feel like a slice of life anime.

Tell us about the development of your latest single “Hunger!”

I had a really good day the day I made it. Came immediately home from work, booted up & ready to make some shit. I was just feeling really good and ambitious. I did it all in one take other than that “i keep it tight knit” bar comes in. started coughing haha.

How do you choose your samples and where do you find them?

I find my shit on youtube, but recently i’ve been crate digging and sampling straight into hardware. But i usually pick samples based off what i want to hear that day or whatever makes my eyes and ears perk up. that’s where it starts.

Do you have any projects in the works that we should be looking out for?

No project right now; I’m just working on being consistent, figuring out new sounds and becoming a better artist. Definitely dropping some more singles, some features from me & whatever else comes my way.
