Interview with Jordan Demby, Young Creative

Interview and Photography by Yarissa Luna

Are you a Delaware native?

I was born and raised in Dover, Delaware. It’s a nice little place. It has positives and negatives, though. Whenever I tell people I’m from Delaware, they look at me like I just told them a lie. I don’t blame them, though. Two of the only famous people from here

I can recall are Joe Biden and Aubrey Plaza (god, I love Aubrey Plaza). Delaware gives me such a comforting vibe. The one thing I’m mad at Delaware for is its lack of entertaining spaces. I mean, we have Funland, Jungle Jim’s, and everything else down by the beach, but that’s only open during the summer. But, I’m not too stressed about it because I can find other ways to entertain myself. But, yeah, I love Delaware-  it’s full of so many hidden treasures. That doesn’t mean I’m not thrilled out of my ass to go explore other places. Ultimately, I think I want to base myself in CA, NYC, TX, or VA and maybe come back for a little when I’m older.

What are your preferred pronouns?

My preferred pronouns are he/him. But if someone were to refer to me as “sis” or something like that, then I wouldn’t mind.

What’s your sign? Does this have any meaning to you?

I was born in September, so I’m a Virgo (I think). I share a sign with Beyoncé, so I’m basically already famous. But star signs don’t mean much to me. Not yet, at least. In the past two years, I’ve been getting into spirituality more and I feel like with time I MIGHT get more into astrology as well. I mean I’m only 17, so I have a lot to learn about myself and my beliefs.

Where do you find inspiration for styling clothing and photoshoots?

The world is my inspiration. When I first started modeling, I observed everything at face value. I used to think green is just the color green, you know? This bland ass way I was thinking was really holding me back. My fits were boring as hell and my concepts were simple. But I started to look into things a little more. Like, now, I see that green represents wealth, disgust, growth, envy and so much more. I have so many ideas for shoots and different projects and I’ve been saving the more complex ones for warmer weather. Recently, I’ve been drawing shoot ideas  from surreal concepts like living toys or mythical creatures. Of course, I have yet to execute them, but that’s besides the point. My point being: Any and everything is my inspiration. I have a whole “notes” section dedicated to ways to transform the mundane into something extraordinary.

Styles and trends are constantly shifting. How would you describe your current aesthetic?

My aesthetic would simply be…Jordan. I learned that it was hard to express myself if I were to try and change certain aspects about myself to fit a specific style. I mean, sometimes my style can come off as very colorful and feminine, while at the same time presenting itself as androgynous and earthy. I’m a complex being, and subjecting myself to a specific aesthetic would take away from the Jordan-ness of it all.

What, if anything, would you change about the local art scene?

The thing I would most like to change is the collaboration between artists across all forms of media. I know personally that connecting with other artists not only opened so many doors for me, but helped me grow as a person/creative. All while making dope ass works of art. I also wanna see more spaces outside of the internet and social media where creators and their audiences can engage. This is hard, considering the precautions presented by Covid, but take that out of the equation, and the bond presented by showing your work live can be that much more powerful. It also adds a human aspect. Rather than seeing shit as colors on a screen, it would more closely tie the artist to their art. OH MY SHIT, ALSO more recognition of artists who are not ablebodied, cis, straight, male, or white. While diversification in art has definitely expanded, it goes without saying that we still have many strides to take.

If you could go back to any period in history, when would it be?

If I had to choose, it would probably be sometime between the 90’s and late-2000’s. I was born in 2003, and I feel like it would be cool asf to experience the things I had just missed out on or could barely remember because of how young I was. Especially the fashion and music of that time. Do you know how dope it would be to experience an MTV Spring Break?

Do you have any hobbies or interests that people wouldn’t expect?

Outside of modeling and fashion, I love to swim competitively. I started about 3 years ago and it’s my favorite sport to participate in, bro. I have a love/hate relationship with swimming. I’ve been staying afloat on my own since I was 2. But the pain that comes with pushing your body through the water is fucking terrible. It’s worth it, though. In another life, I was probably a merman. Dang I’d be so cute as a fish. I’ve also been playing trombone since I was in the 5th grade. Mostly for school, but a few weeks ago I started playing songs for my own enjoyment rather than to fulfill a grade. I’m also in LOVE with movies and music and love exploring the bridge between the two. One of my dream jobs is to score movies. That seems so fulfilling.

Ideally, where do you hope modeling will lead you? Are you exploring any specific future career paths?

I have a dream of walking during NYFW (New York Fashion Week), but that’s just like a little side quest to the main story. I also constantly think about being a part of an ad campaign or look book for big companies. Like, the thought of walking into a store and seeing my face on the wall makes me so happy. I really want to use modeling as a tool to help me express and articulate what I have to say. Not only creatively, but as a way for me to inspire and create change within our community. I used to want to be a marine biologist so fucking bad in middle school, until I realized that it would clash with my fear of animals. I’ve recently set myself on a career path toward the realm of film, music, and marketing. Business/marketing was one of my favorite subjects in school, and I just love the techniques involved in trying to appeal to consumers. I used to go through so many career phases. I wanted to be a CSI, a lawyer, a firefighter, a doctor, an astrophysicist, an actor, and an animator. I just went through a crisis last semester trying to figure out my future, and by the end I realized a few things. There is so much pressure (too much in some cases) put on our youth to have their life plan set by the time they finish their Sophomore year of high school, and that can be really overwhelming. Many of us feel that if we don’t get into a top college, have a life plan set, or have our dream job by the time we’re in our early-20’s then we’re simply… failures. And they’re right. No, I’m just kidding, but in all seriousness, there is too much emphasis on trying to create a perfect endgame rather than focusing on the life we’re currently living. I’ve come to terms that my life doesn’t have a set endpoint. People grow and things change and so will my interests in careers.

Is there anything you’re looking forward to this year?

I’m really looking forward to working with other creatives during the summer. It’s been difficult trying to find time to work on modeling while navigating my Junior year of high school. This year, my schedule has been booked to the fullest extent. Like, yeah, to one degree it’s good I’m staying productive, but SHITTTT I’ve barely had time to work on full-fledged projects. The past few months I’ve met a fuckload of other creatives who are swag asf and I’m just so ready to collaborate with them. The art you can make when two or more people blend their visions together is such beautiful thing. Not to mention, warm summer weather makes MFs significantly happier. Ain’t it crazy how a ball of fire in the sky can impact our emotions on such a large scale? I’m also excited for all the films set to release later this year. I’m gonna say this right now, I’m a bitch for movies dawg. I could spend a whole day just analyzing films, learning about the technical aspects of them. I also have a few student led panels and video essays i wanna present throughout the year. Many topics ranging from +/- representation and tropes in media to social justice and everyday life.
